Many golfers have a great deal of trouble with bunker shots but really they are the easiest shot in the game! No, I’m not trying to be smart. The reason I say this is because hitting out of the sand is pretty much the only time in a round where you don’t have to make contact with the ball (long and fairway bunker shots excepted). This means that you can make contact with the sand anywhere from an inch up to even a foot behind the ball and you can still get the ball out onto the green. The major keys are to make a long smooth even-tempo swing and make sure that you swing the club down into and through the sand. Because you are not hitting the ball you need to ensure that your follow through is long enough to move sand and ball. From a setup point of view you need a wide stance, align yourself left (for right-handers), ball position off the front foot, grip normal (not down the grip), clubface right of target and weight evenly distributed. The last thing to remember is to keep your arms and hands as tension-free as possible. |
