To calculate this player’s handicap, we average out the best ten differentials (average of 18, 18, 13, 16, 14, 19, 14, 16, 19, 14) which gives us a value of 16.1.  This is then multiplied by 0.96 (the bonus for excellence) to give 15.456 Finally any numbers after the first decimal point are truncated (deleted) to arrive at an exact handicap of 15.4.  This in turn is rounded to a playing handicap of 15.

Update On Handicapping

On the 9^th April 2010 Golf Australia fundamentally changed the method for calculating an Australian handicap.  They now simply average the best ten of the most recent twenty figures in your ‘played to’ column (see example) and then multiply this average by 0.96. 

 

This is a much more straight forward process than the current incremental calculation system, and is the first steps of several on the way to full adoption of the USGA’s Handicap system.

The full implementation cannot begin until all courses have been individually rated.   Slope handicapping requires all courses to be rated according to the USGA system, a task currently being undertaken all around Australia.  The aim is to have it completed by the end of 2011 with the entire Slope System being introduced in January 2012.
